At the end of this topic page, we provide a number of potential sources of support and guidance for those concerned about uncontrolled drinking or alcohol dependency.
Additionally, all individuals who were born between 1997 and 2012 and categorized as Gen Z do not act or think in the same way, but world/national events are likely to have had an impact on their personalities.
To do so, we first looked at City-Data for the number of drinks each city’s inhabitants drink in a week on average.
Looking at our one-year calculation, Miami, FL rises to the second most expensive city in the U.S. ($1,996.80), topped only by New York, NY ($2,029.82).
For the wine industry, premiumization growth in wine occurs „particularly in the space between $15 and $24.99, which is the only segment of the wine market that is growing.“ For wine, a greater percentage of those who were female (44%), college graduates (39%), and those with an annual household income of $100,000 or more (35%) selected the beverage compared to their counterparts. Seventy-six percent of U.S. wine trade members who responded to a Wine Opinions survey „at the end of 2022“ expect at least „some growth“ in the „better for you“ wine category, compared to 64% and 61% who expect the same for “zero alcohol” wine and „lower alcohol“ wine, respectively. Gallup measures Americans’ alcohol consumption each July as part of its Consumption Habits poll — one of 12 surveys that make up the Gallup Poll Social Series. Percentage change in per capita ethanol consumption, United States, 1977–2021. For some people, however, abstaining or reducing consumption is a struggle due to myriad factors.

The Center conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, computational social science research and other data-driven research. Pew Research Center is a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts, its primary funder. There were 11,282 wineries in the U.S. in 2021, of which 16% were categorized as small (5,000-49,999 cases produced annually), 33% very small (1,000 to 4,999 cases), and 48% with „limited production“ (less than 1,000 cases). In an article published by WGSN, we should begin to see Chinese baijiu, a white spirit, „and the world’s most-consumed spirit, outselling whisky, vodka, gin, rum, and tequila combined,“ become more prevalent.
Alcohol, crime, and road deaths
Using CDC data on the average life expectancy in each state, we then found the number of drinks consumed over a lifetime on average. Finally, we used Expatistan to find the average cost of alcoholic drinks in each city in order to determine the cost of drinking over various periods of time, including a full lifetime (age 21 and up). Our calculation included the cost of two drinks “out” each week, and all remaining drinks at home. The charts show global consumption of wine, first in terms of wine as a share of total alcohol consumption, and then the estimated average consumption per person. The charts show global consumption of beer, first in terms of beer as a share of total alcohol consumption, and then the estimated average consumption per person. Still, other data indicated that in 2023, 52% of consumers aged 18 to 34 felt that „drinking in moderation is bad for your health,“ an increase from 34% reported in 2018 for this age group.
Nevertheless, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) offers a tool to help you get a handle on just how much you’re spending on alcohol alone. Its Alcohol Spending Calculator allows you to input the number of days you drink per week, quantity of drinks per day, and average price of a drink to calculate your weekly, monthly, and yearly expenditures. The chart shows direct death rates (not including suicide deaths) from alcohol use disorders across the world. The death rates are typically higher in Eastern Europe and lower in North Africa and the Middle East. The scatter plot compares the prevalence of alcohol use disorders in males versus that of females.
But those declines were more than covered by growth in Japanese, Indian, and American brands. Measuring the health impact by mortality alone fails to capture the impact that alcohol use disorders have on an individual’s well-being. The ‚disease burden‘ – measured in Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) – considers mortality and years lived with disability or health burden. The map shows DALYs per 100,000 people, which result from alcohol use disorders.
On the whole, U.S. drinkers reported consuming a modest amount of alcohol in 2022, averaging four drinks per week for all drinkers. The figure rises to six drinks per week on average for those who appear to be regular drinkers, defined as those who had at least one drink in the past week. AEDS obtained State population estimates for people ages 14 and older from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s WONDER online query system, which what is the strongest vodka provides population estimates produced by the U.S. Census Bureau (Single-race Population Estimates 2022; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 2021). These data are used as denominators to calculate the per capita consumption figures. Going out for drinks is part of many people’s social lives, young and old, but it can potentially develop into a costly problem in multiple ways.
„Flavored subcategories – from beer to vodka to US whiskey – are significantly outperforming traditional non-flavored subcategories. Flavor is also the top consumer driver of the fast-growing ready-to-drink (RTD) category, and that’s likely creating a halo effect on total alcohol as well.“ There are also financial downsides to regular drinking, especially if one has a habit of drinking frequently and/or in large quantities. The prevalence of alcohol dependence in men is typically higher than in women across all countries. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), in its Global Burden of Disease study, provides estimates of the number of deaths attributed to the range of risk factors.5 In the visualization, we see the number of deaths per year attributed to each risk factor. This chart is shown for the global total but can be explored for any country or region using the „Change country or region“ toggle. Both are measured in terms of pure alcohol/ethanol intake rather than the total quantity of the beverage. Wine contains around 12% pure alcohol per volume, so that one liter of wine contains 0.12 liters of pure alcohol.
